  1. This dialogue is exactly why people should vote for Obama. The only arguments I’ve seen ‘for’ Hillary by her supporters is, “she’s a she”. Gender is not a qualifying feature for a president, anymore than race is. Michael mentions political reasons for supporting Obama. Marcia mentions “herstory” and “women’s history month”.

Is it time for a female president? Yes. Is that a reason to vote for a female? No.

  2. Sphynx, I am a Hillary supporter. Let me dispel your perception that the only arguments for Hillary is “she’s a she”.

    – Hillary is the liberal straight shooter. Her health care plan is truly universal and puts us on the path to a single-payer system. Barack himself extolled the virtues of a bold universal health care plan in a 2007 speech. But as a presidential candidate, he presents a wimpy plan that is NOT universal. Why? I can only imagine it’s “neoliberal triangulation”. For more info: http://tinyurl.com/353y3o

    – Hillary is more electable than Barack. She has been fully vetted and tested. She has beaten tough Republicans in races where the RNC has poured tons of cash for her opponent. Barack is still mostly a blank slate. He has high positives and low negatives now, but this can change dramatically once the Republicans focus their guns on him should he be the nominee. Recent polls show that Barack loses more democrats to McCain than does Hillary. For more info: http://tinyurl.com/3axzg8

    – Hillary is a woman of action, not just words. She was a major force behind SCHIP (the State Children’s Health Insurance Plan) which covers 6 million indigent children every year. She forced the FDA to finally rule on making Emergency Contraception over the counter, which could prevent up to 2 million unwanted pregnancies and 1 million abortions each year. What has Barack accomplished that is comparable?

  3. This whole statement about Nafta is nott even true,,, soon your going to say when Obama live on the news telling reporters No one in his campaign meet with Canadians leader,,,than a few days later ,Obama back tracked,, ya they met but it not what was said,,,,, If Obama don’t know what his own top guys,,, he not going to be much of a leader, No one made Obama lied on tv,,, that all Obama,,, plain and simple,,, can’t blame Hilary,, for that,,, that why I am switching my Vote for Hilary…..

He can not win a big state no matter what anyone say He can not get elected with out winning a big state, and because he lied about Nafta, No matter how you cut it,, He lied on video that now one from his campaign meet with the canadians,, but ti was true, show you how barack going to run the show, and because of his wife
Michelle Obama is hurting Barack Campaign she need to get off the campaign trail,,, Really she look like Mike tyson with Hair for god sakes.

Barack is not going to win the presidency,,
He can not even win 1 big state,,, Everyone is caught up in this Barack Obama magic show, the democrats just gave this campaign away to the republicans, Barack will never see the white House only if he takes a tour,,, The Obama campaign
think if Hilary gone he will pick up the other half of the Democratic votes,,, that is where he is wrong,,,He will only pick up a third of Hilary votes, the there 2/3 well half of them are going to act like obama voter if obama don’t win they are not going to vote ,,, 1/3 of Hilary voter will not vote,,and the other third is like me I voted for Hilary
I am voting for Experience, which is Hilary,, if Hilary is pushed out ,, My vote like tens of thousands are going to vote for McCain,,, If Obama get Hilary to be her vice president,, Obama will still lose, but if Hilary win she will take the presidency Obama can be vice president,, so he can get On the job training ,,,, this is the only way its going to work,,, American people are so dumb,, thinking Obama got a shot, even tho he has not won a single big state it going to matter,, Even the Media is finally see that..
Who has more experience, well in order
    1 Hilary
    2 McCain,
    3 Ron Paul
    4 Barack
That sums it up right there, Hilary in this for the long haul She is fighting Barack , McCain & the Media and she still doing good,, She has half the democratic votes, LOL
Now that is funny,,,,, Do the math,,,

  4. I truly appreciate the mutual respect this wonderful couple has for each other in the matter of “which candidate is best.” But as a married 60 year old African American ordained minister and grandma of three grandsons, I cannot see anyone better than Barack Obama carrying the future forward with their needs in mind.

On the other hand, as a woman, and in particular as a minister, I thoroughly understand the oppressive impact of sexism; and can relate to why many women see this as an opportunity to have a stronger voice or representation for our issues– should Senator Clinton become the president.

But in the final analysis–I honestly believe that the inspiration of hope for the future should always be the deciding factor. Our children, quite frankly, need something much better than simply someone who vindicates us psychologically because they are “like us” in terms of race or sex. I dare say that racism and sexism will still be issues regardless of whether Obama or Clinton becomes the next president. So those are problems that we will continue the need to address. We can see from the exit polls that show how polarized we still are, and how much the TV news loves to stress it.

I fail to see what real and tangible experience (beyond her age) suggests that Senator Clinton is patently “more qualified” than Senator Obama. There is not a hill of beans worth of difference in their stated plans (and I’ve read them both thoroughly). So the distinctions can only be drawn by casting doubts and getting nasty–which seems to be where Senator Clinton likes to go. Well, I for one, don’t like it, and am starting to lose the respect that I did have for her.

In my view—we need a fresh start—all the way! I’m voting for the future not based upon a checkered history in Washington, but based upon hope that is obviously backed with tremendous ability and judgement going forward. Obama is the clear choice in this case.

And after much deliberation, I became a strong supporter of the only person in this political race who goes above and beyond and embodies “hope” for not only our adult children—but for their children who can see in Sentator Obama–who they are and what they can become regarding society in America.

Rev. Marcia—you are a beautiful, highly intelligent sister. We share a lot of the same struggles. But, I completely dissagree with you on this one. Like you, I marvel at the courage, strength, and determination of Senator Clinton who has proven herself to be exceptional and phenomenal. But, honestly, Senator Clinton is getting on a lot of folks “bad side.” If she is not careful, she may find people who should be her base supporters if she gets the nomination may be reluctant to vote for her.

To be specific, to me it is “racist” to always insist that African Americans are not qualified for the jobs or positions they are applying for (when in truth they are just as qualified or more so).

Barack Obama has MORE foreign relations experience than President Bill Clinton and others before taking office. Secondly, it is “racist” to insist that intelligent black people are nothing more than “articulate” or full of empty words but lack substance. The campaign you support touts exactly those things.

I don’t remember any presidential candidate being scrutinized nearly as much as he has been because of the so-called “lack of experience” or “empty words” theme.

Well, I guess, I’ll just go along with the young folks because what IS obvious;the experience in Washington has brought us to…a deplorable ecomomy, an immoral war, and a congress that can’t even set aside partisanship long enough to resolve drug charges of a baseball player! In the meantime, those that will need to pay social security taxes—are losing their jobs or have no opportunities while we plan to build more prisons for the next young man who might be inspired by the likes of Barack Obama and decide he can make better choices than the ones he sees right now. I’d rather see him go to college with a $4000 stipend than to prison. And I think that’s what Senator Obama is proposing.

  5. Forgive me Michael, but Marcia is right, for one reason and one reason only. All of your points focus on how Obama will help the black comunity and that Marcia should choose a candidate that “looks like [her] son,” you also say that Obama is a “candidate who happens to be black,” and you are playing on the Obama campaign to show Obama as a candidate and not a black man. You are contradicting yourself and the Obama campaign because electability is about what unique plans a candidate can offer (which you effectively mentioned, but it’s almost identical to Hillary’s goals for the nation, so your points don’t count).

I am a black male “legally,” my grandfather is black, the rest of my blood is Puerto Rican. Marcia is choosing Hillary because of the same fundamental changes you believe Obama can enact, but she also realizes that above race, experience, dedication and perserverance are true qualities of a President. Although she did not directly use these words in her comment, her words effectively described these characteristics.

I respect the both of you, and love to watch you two on CNN. What I love about your relationship apart from other polical commenters is that you separate your “union” and become Hillary and Obama supporters and speak to eachother as if you are not married. I like how you can do that, but I love even moreso how you can still love eachother at the end of the day “agree to disagree.”

Although I have already cast my vote in California for Hillary Clinton, I guess I will just have to take a deep breath in November when I am at the polls, say a prayer, and cast my vote again for Hillary even though Obama’s name appears on the Vice President ticket. LOL President. LOL

I had to say that Michael in all good fun, I could hear your heart drop from here. God Bless the both of you!!!

  6. I am not surprised that Michael and Marcia are a house divided. They both are totally opposite of each other. He’s very outgoing and outspoken and she stands in the shadow of her husband. I, of course am a Barack supporter because I, like many other Blacks are beginning to see the Clinton’s ugly, true colors. She falsely accused Barack of “playing the race card” that I believe Hillary and her husband are playing, in order to, win the Black vote. Bill was seen a few days ago with Brad Pitt, breaking ground to rebuild houses in New Orleans. It’s a strategy to win the Black vote! Notice three years ago, when Katrina hit New Orleans the Clintons did not make any effort to help make a change. They were walking around New Orleans with the Bushes, condescending Black residents as “refugees” which I believe is a deplorable disgrace!!! The Government took for granted their own residents and citizens of this Country and did not yet put forth any effort to help the evacuees of New Orleans rebuild and return to their original homes!! Improvement is still pending in this situation. Hillary has the nerve to use tactics to encourage Black voters to vote for her, when she, herself has condescending opinions of Blacks, off camera. I was told by one of my peers that she felt that a young black female was not doing well in her life, because she was the right color, because she was Black!! Blacks need to stop calling Bill Clinton the first Black president, because he really is not as pro-Black as he wants to seem!! Neither him nor Hillary really care genuinely about Blacks as most White politicians do!!!

  7. People don’t realize how really phony the Dysons are in real life!!! They do know how to put on the charm and speak so positively about Blacks in the Media, but don’t practice what they preach, off camera!! They have lied and decieved many Black people about their real personalities and personal qualities! Michael is very outspoken and outgoing and loves attention from fine-looking, young women and is very flirtatious with other women outside his wife!! I witnessed his holding Melyssa Ford, the Video vixen’s(ho) hand on the Hip-Hop vs. America broadcast on BET! His wife was not even present and doesn’t seem to bother her that he’s very flirtatious!!! She, on the other hand, stands in his shadow and not many people would know who she is. IShe’s not a household name and does not make many public appearances! He wants to come across as this “respectable gentleman,” who never disrespect women when, in essence, He Does!!!!!! He tear down and blatantly Lie about respectable, dignified women’s character just because he thinks “she ain’t fine, physically!” He’s a very jive acting, pretentious, player who loves the company of fine, young attractive women no matter how wild and unladylike some of them are!!!! This is a True Fact!!!! People in the media are never what they want you to believe! Most of them are pretentious people who want to be looked upon in a positive way without living up to a positive image!!! He and his wife are Huge False Prophets, who will lie and decieve the public to protect their phony televised personas!!!!! No matter how dignified some of us are, the good people are always lied about and decieved of in a negative way, on purpose, by those who have to lie or to make themselves “look good” in public or on camera!!!!! Looking good does not make you good, if you don’t practice being good on a daily basis!!!!!!!!!!! Let the Truth Set All of Us Free!!!!!

  8. For me, Barack is the stronger candidate for all Americans, but particularly people with less power on our society for 3 reasons:

    1) Ethics & Transparency. Barack has been a champion of ethics reform to lessen the power of lobbyists in the Illinois and U.S. senates and has been a leader in disclosing his record to the American people. He released his tax returns and he disclosed his earmarks, because he understands that for regular people to have a voice in our democracy, we need to take the anvil off the scale for monied interests.

    2) Unifying Leadership. Barack has demonstrated his ability to take a crisis and turn it into an opportunity–most recently in his historic and moving speech on race on March 18. A speech that was shockingly honest, open, and nuanced–and completely surprising coming from any politician running for elected office. What we will need after 8 years of a failed presidency and polarized politics is exactly this quality of someone who can bridge the divides among us — and shed light, not heat, on volatile but important issues. This ability to take in and consider different viewpoints to help us move forward goes back to his days as a community organizer when he had to build coalitions of working people to get things done. I admired that Hillary took leadership to try to expand healthcare in the 1990s, but she was unable to unify people to support the cause and rejected attempts to collaborate even within her own party. Barack’s leadership and management skills are also on display in his highly effective grassroots campaign–which has out-organized, out-fundraised, and thoroughly out-matched a veteran political team that has been on the national scene for nearly 2 decades.

    3) Trust & Judgment. This is my biggest concern about a Clinton presidency. I really have doubts about whether I can trust that what she says today will still be her commitment tomorrow if it’s no longer politically expedient. Most recently, I really view with suspicion her current statements that she left her name on the ballot in Michigan because she believed the voices of people there should count. But in October of last year, she justified leaving her name on the ballot for precisely the opposite reason, because “It’s clear. This election they’re having is not going to count for anything.” While she has been a strong voice for women and children over the course of her career–that’s why I really felt a strong betrayal by her and Bill Clinton when they championed a welfare reform that pushed struggling families caricaturized as ‘welfare queens’ off the rolls without adequate job support and training to get back on their feet. For this, her longtime friend and director of Childrens Defense Fund called the Clintons no friends in politics. On the Iraq War, Hillary did not exercise her due diligence by reviewing all the available intelligence reports–in particular the National Intelligence Estimate, which led the Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee to vote against authorizing the use of military force in Iraq. Barack has displayed a greater consistency in the causes that he has supported–and courage to stand up, even when it might not be politically expedient. In referencing her experience as a First Lady, she’s told an outright whopper when she talked about landing in Bosnia under sniper fire. It was completely unnecessary as I’m sure she must have some actual examples that highlight legitimate foreign policy experience, but the ease with which she’s repeated this tall tale is really perplexing and does not instill confidence.

  9. Michael Eric Dyson mentions that Obama supports eliminating sentencing disparities between crack and cocaine sentencing that disproportionately affect low-income people of color. Such disparities have been harshly criticized. While both Obama and Clinton admit that something needs to be done about this going forward, only Obama is willing to talk about fixing it retroactively for the nearly 20,000 who may be serving excessively harsh sentences.

To avoid fixing the problem for those who might have been sentenced under unjust laws seems to me a fear of too much justice motivated by political concerns.

  10. Can’t understand how marcella can remain a supporter of Hilliary Clinton. Hillary’s appeal to blue collar democrats is historical based in the “Southern” strategy used by the former “Dixiecrats” of the Republican party.

  11. I DON’T CARE WHO THE DYSONS VOTE AND I’M SURE NOBODY DOES, BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO VOTE FOR WHOMEVER THEY BELIEVE IN!!! WHAT PEOPLE FAIL TO REALIZE OR CONCENTRATE ON, IS THE REAL ISSUES THAT ARE BEING BROUGHT FORTH BY BOTH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES!!!! NO MATTER WHO WINS THE PRESIDENCY IN NOVEMBER, I HOPE IT WILL BE A CANDIDATE WHO ADVOCATES EQUALITY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL HUMANITY AND WILL BE A STRONG ADVOCATE OF PROGRESSIVE CHANGE!!! ON THE OTHER HAND, I DON’T APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT HILLARY CLINTON, FALSELY ACCUSED OBAMA OF “PLAYING THE RACE CARD” WHICH WAS NEVER HEARD NOR ADMITTED BY BARACK HIMSELF!!! I BELIEVE BLACK AMERICA IS BEGINNING TO SEE THE “TRUE SIDE” OF BILL AND HILLARY CLINTON, THAT HAS NEVER BEEN EXPOSED NOR SEEN BEFORE, UNTIL NOW! I DON’T HAVE HARSH FEELINGS AGAINST THE CLINTONS AND I DON’T WISH THEM ANY HARM, BUT THEY HAVE REPEATEDLY AND VICIOUSLY FALSELY ACCUSED AND LIED ABOUT OBAMA, ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, BECAUSE OF HER DESPERATION FOR MORE VOTES IN THE PRIMARIES AND THROUGHOUT THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN!!! I FIND IT DEPLORABLE THAT HILLARY ADVOCATED GOLDWATER, YEARS AGO, WHO WAS STAUNCHLY AGAINST DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S HOLIDAY!!! WE ALL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHAT WE SAY AND DO, BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL TRY THE VERY BEST AT TRYING TO MESS UP ANYONE’S REPUTABLE REPUTATION AS SO MANY POLITICIANS HAVE GONE THROUGH OVER THE YEARS!!! I JUST HOPE THAT WHOMEVER GOD SELECTS TO WIN THIS ELECTION WILL BE A COMPASSIONATE, SPIRIT-FILLED LEADER WHO WILL BRING ABOUT PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES AND WILL BE A VERY STRONG ADVOCATE OF PROGRESSIVE CHANGE IN THIS COUNTRY FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!!!!! MAY GOD BLESS OBAMA AND HIS FAMILY AND THE CLINTONS AND ALL OTHER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES!!! WE MUST ALL LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER TO HELP HEAL THE WOUNDS OF THIS COUNTRY AND BRING ABOUT A
“BROTHERHOOD RELATIONSHIP” WITH ALL OTHER COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS!! ALTHOUGH BUSH MADE ALOT OF MISTAKES, WE HOPE THIS COUNTRY WILL MOVE FORWARD TO MUCH BRIGHTER HORIZONS AND FEWER RAINSTORMS….. WE MUST LEARN TO HELP EACH OTHER AS AMERICANS IN BOTH TIMES OF JOY AND PERILE!!! I JUST HOPE THAT GOD WILL CONTINUE TO BE MERCIFUL, TO AMERICA AND TO ALL OTHER COUNTRIES, IN TIME OF TROUBLE….

  12. I AM VERY HIGHLY DISGUSTED AND DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DYSONS IN REAL LIFE!!! THEY SHOULD BE SHAME OF THEMSELVES TOO FOR SELLING OUT BLACK FOLK THEY DON’T KNOW AND NEVER MET!!!! THEY WANT TO BE LOOKED AS HIGH-PROFILED, EDUCATED AND SCHOLARLY, BUT IN DIFFICULT TIMES, THEY SEEK THE EASY OF FINDING HAPPINESS BY STIRRING UP LIES AND DECEIT TO FLATTER THEMSELVES IN TRYING TO RUIN THE REPUTATION OF A YOUNG, RESPECTABLE LADY, SUCH AS MYSELF!!! WHAT I AM SAYING IS ALL FACT AND NONE OF IT IS A LIE!!! I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS TIMES, THESE TWO FALSE PROPHETS TALKING NEGATIVELY AND SPITEFULLY, UNDER FALSE PRETENSES, TO OTHER BLACKS AGAINST OTHER BLACKS THEY DON’T KNOW AND HAVE NEVER MET!!!! IT’S BAD ENOUGH THAT AS A MINORITY, WE ARE ONE OF THE BIGGEST SUFFERERS AND VICTIMS OF RACISM, IN THIS COUNTRY AND TO SEE TWO SO-CALLED ORDAINED MINISTERS MAKING UP BLASPHEMOUS AND TOTAL LIES WITH FICTIONAL DETAIL AGAINST A YOUNG BLACK LADY THAT NEVER MET, BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT SHE WAS NOT ATTRACTIVE. THIS HIPPOCRITE NAMED MICHAEL DYSON, WHO PRETENDS HE RESPECTS BLACK WOMEN, IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST, FAT, MYSOGINISTIC, CHARLATANS I HAVE EVER SEEN AND HAS THE NERVE TO LIE AND DECIEVE A YOUNG,BLACK LADY’S CHARACTER IN A DEROGATORY FASHION, BECAUSE HE THOUGHT SHE WAS NOT FINE IN HIS EYES!!!! WHAT A BIG HIPPOCRITE WHO ALSO CRITIQUES GANSTA RAPPERS FOR DENEGRATING AND DEGRADING WOMEN IN THEIR RAP LYRICS!!!! IN REAL LIFE, HE DOES THE SAME EXACT THING AND HAS NO SHAME IN HOW HE CARRIES HIMSELF LIKE A “PIMP ON A PROWL” EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT HE’S BEEN A STREET HUSTLER FOR MANY YEARS OF HIS LIFE AND HAS HAD HUNDREDS OF WOMEN AS GIRLFRIENDS, PARAMOURS, FIANCEES, AND WIVES!!!! WHEN HE SAID HE LOVES WOMEN, HE’S NOT LYING!!!!! HE’S A BIG PIMP WITH A GIGANTIC SEXUAL AND INSATIABLE APPETITE FOR SEX WITH WOMEN!!!! HE WANTS TO BE LOOKED AT AS A MORAL, SCHOLAR, BUT DOESN’T PRACTICE WHAT HE PREACHES ABOUT MORALITY, IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE!!! HE’S GOT SOME NERVE TRYING TO HUMILIATE AND DEGRADE VERY RESPECTABLE, YOUNG BLACK WOMEN, WHO DON’T WANT HIM NOR DESIRE HIM!!! HE’S JUST A PLAYER WHO CAN NOT TAKE WHAT HE DISHES OUT!!!!!

  13. Kristen,

    What?

1)Transparency? Good grief! I wonder where Obama is getting all of his campaign funding? Has he ever answered the questions concerning the busing of his supporters from Illinois to Iowa to help him win that primary? He hasn’t answered anything about the corruption in the Rezko trial. Barack has been implicated in this corruption and eventually the truth will come out. You have been bamboozled!

    2) Half the people that heard Barack’s speech will disagree with you. HIs speech was a desperate attempt by a black man to whitewash black racism. Barack’s speech on race was basically a bunch of excuses for inexcusable behavior. Nothing more or less. Barack then had to have a news conference to formally disassociate himself from his so-called “mentor”, Mr. Wright. I still don’t believe Barack on this issue. This single issue is enough for me not to vote for him. Racism in any form is unforgiveable.

    3) At least Hillary went to Bosnia! Your trying to malign Hillary for her trip to Bosnia shows me that you will grasp on to anything, regardless of how inconsequential it actually is, that makes her look bad. Big deal! It has been reported that there was a concern about snipers in Bosnia at the time. Everyone on the trip to Bosnia had to wear their flack jackets! Why would they wear them if it wasn’t considered necessary? It was a war zone after all, even if she happened to arrive on a day when there were no violent incidents in that area. She and her cohorts had to cross over hostile territory to get to her destination. Personally, lying about not knowing your pastor is a racist, is so much more relevant to understanding a person’s psyche. It is so much more disturbing to me.

I have had enough of Barack Obama’s lies and misrepresentations. I have a clear conscience when it comes to my support for Hillary Clinton.

  14. Once again the woman shows she is brighter than the man. Michael just doesn’t get it and is drunk on Obamaid. Now that Obama is president and just oh “so cool”. He can’t handle when a reporter questions him about appointing a lobbyist when he said he wouldn’t. Hillary talked about the three legged stool of foreign policy and later the same day Obama stole her “three legged stool” analogy and tried to apply it to his stimulus package and only discussed 1 leg. Does Obama actually know what a 3 legged stool is? He eerily is similar to George Bush.

  15. “Barack gets that we need universal heath care (helps a lot of black folk); he gets that we need to remove the dismal disparity between sentences for powder and crack cocaine (helps a lot of young black men who make mistakes none of us want to see them make in the first place); he gets that we need to get out of Iraq (and you know a lot of us are on the front line); he gets that we need educational reform (which will help millions of black children who’ve been left behind by the Republicans); he gets that we need to stop giving all those tax cuts to the rich and start giving the middle class a break (that includes a lot of black professionals); and he gets that we need many more jobs to pull working poor and working class people out of the economic pits to which Republican slash and burn policies have sent them.”

And right after this paragraph, Micahel E Dyson has the nerce to say that obama just happens to be black….

Puhleazzee! Its time for people like Michael Dyson to think about other people than black people. Black people do not have a license to claim they are the only ones with problems in this country.
